Translation rates

In accordance with Austrian standard ÖNORM D 1200, a translator's fee is calculated via price per standard line, as agreed upon by translators and clients. One standard line equals 55 characters, spaces included. The price of a translation corresponds to price per line times number of lines, as counted by the word processor in the source text, or in the target text.

Globally, the more common standard is to calculate a translation fee on a per-source-word basis. My quotes include both types of rates, either of which may be used to calculate the total, depending on the client's preference and background.

Across the industry, charges vary considerably, and so does the quality of translations produced by different providers. An invoice total will depend on the translator’s status and experience, the language pair involved, the complexity of a specific translation, the delivery deadline, etc. When asking for a quote, please expect the following:

  • in accordance with § 6 1 Z 27 UStG, I am exempt from charging VAT
  • rates are based on the volume of the source text
(no ex-post adjustments to quoted totals)
  • delivery in file format of your choice

If you want to see an automated cost estimate based on standard lines, please enter the chars total (spaces included) in the field below.
