The German language
German is the official language of Germany, Liechtenstein and Austria. It shares official status in Switzerland (21 of 26 Swiss Cantons) and Luxembourg. Standard German and German dialects are spoken by more than 120 million people in 38 countries of the world. On the Internet, German is second to English only, with over 8% of all websites being published in German. 'Schriftdeutsch' is the standardized form of the German language. It is used in all formal and most written communications. However, country-specific vocabularies and verbal collocations do exist and need to be accounted for in localizations and translations for defined markets and target groups.
While my actual mother tongue is Czech, I consider German to be my first language, since I received most of my higher and further education in German and have lived in a German-speaking country since 1982. I was lucky enough to learn German at a sufficiently young age to speak it without any accent other than Viennese, that is.
